En 2003, la vente de musique en ligne s’organise par le biais de sites légaux et payants. Le premier site est l’iTunes Music Store d’Apple, lancé en avril 2003 en même temps que le baladeur numérique iPod, qui connaît un succès fulgurant. Apple propose également une version Windows d’iTunes en octobre 2003. RealNetworks, auteur du RealPlayer (logiciel de lecture audio et vidéo), lance Rhapsody, une plateforme de vente de musique en ligne sur abonnement. La chaîne de supermarchés Wal-Mart lance elle aussi un secteur de téléchargement de musique, suite à l’achat de Liquid Audio. Napster nouvelle formule est lancé en octobre 2003 par l’éditeur de logiciels Roxio. Sony lance son service Connect aux Etats-Unis au printemps 2004 et Connect Europe en été 2004. Yahoo! rachète le site Musicmatch en septembre 2004.
